Gothenburg Resident: Dr. Larry Garrett (1941-2016)

   Dr. Larry D. Garrett, 75, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died June 21st, 2016 at Gothenburg, Nebraska.  
  He was born April 7, 1941 in Alliance, Nebraska, son of Donald and Dorothy (Colerick) Garrett. Larry grew up in Alliance. He married Barbara Dietrich on August 7th, 1960 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alliance.
  Larry attended Chadron State College from 1959 to 1962. He attended Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee graduating in 1965. He was President and Salutatorian of his graduating class from SCO.   They then moved to Gothenburg where he began his optometric practice on September 7th, 1965.  Larry had a satellite practice in Cozad 18 years.  Larry was the president of the NCIP (Nebraska Community Improvement Program). He was a 33 year member of GVFD.  He traveled to Bolivia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and twice to Peru with Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) giving free eye exams to the underprivileged. 
  Surviving are wife, Barbara Garrett of Gothenburg, Nebraska, daughter, Lisa (Jon) Seimer of Gothenburg, Nebraska, grandchildren Alex and Abby Meyer; 2 brothers, Randall  and Gregory (Cheryl) Garrett; along with nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
  Larry was preceded by his parents; brother, Dennis Garrett; sister-in-law, Julieanne (Pape) Garrett; niece, Denille Garrett-Burke; in-laws Alex & Shirley Dietrich, Jack & Alma Runge; Kenneth Dietrich. 
  Visitation was held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; Sunday, June 26th, 2016.
  Funeral Services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Monday, June 27th, 2016 at 11:00 am with Rev. Jeff Cottingham officiating.  
  Interment followed in the Gothenburg Cemetery, Gothenburg, Nebraska.
