Swedes Claim Thriller Over Holdrege On Friday
The Swedes used a great mix of running and passing attacks to score a season opening 17-14 win over Holdrege on Friday evening in less than ideal conditions on the gridiron.
The Gothenburg defense flexed their muscle to keep the Dusters from scoring on their opening possession.
The Swedes offense were able to methodically work down the field to within scoring range, as Dominic Long put a charge into a 22-yard field goal to give Gothenburg a 3-0 lead with 2:59 to play in the opening quarter.
Holdrege was able to regain some of the lost momentum with a big kickoff return that gave them an advantageous field position. The Dusters cashed in on the opportunity with Alex Wells powering into the endzone on a one-yard run with 11:56 left in the first half to make the score 7-3.
Sticking to their game plan of mixing the run and pass, Gothenburg was able to work the chains to put a scoring drive together that benefitted greatly with Bennett Folkers being on the receiving end of a Dawson Graham 14-yard scoring pass to make the score 10-7 with 5:04 to play before the halftime break.
The Swedes held a 10-7 lead entering the break and they were able to build on that momentum in a big way in the third quarter. Making the defense pay was Bennett Folkers as he caught a short pass and went the distance for a 72-yard touchdown reception from Dawson Graham with 5:04 left in the third quarter.
With their backs against the wall and a deficit of 17-7, Zach Hurlbert found Dalton Harrel for a 12-yard scoring connection to cut into the deficit 17-14 with just 4:44 left in regulation.
Despite the Dusters attempts, Gothenburg’s defense stood strong and turned Holdrege away when Dawson Graham netted an interception to end all scoring threats with Gothenburg netting the 17-14 victory.
Swede signal-caller Dawson Graham completed 13-of-18 pass attempts for 194 yards ad two touchdowns.
Gothenburg’s Bennett Folkers reeled in four receptions for 130 yards and two scores.
