Gothenburg Native: Alfred Lee Paul, age 90 (1922-2012)

Alfred Lee Paul passed away July 31st, 2012 at Stone Hearth Estates in Gothenburg. He was born June 20th, 1922, to Henry and Bertha (Yanken) Paul at Maxwell Nebraska, he attended high school in Maxwell where he excelled in football and track before enlisting in the army on October 21st, 1942, where he served as a supply clerk in the parachute department. He received a medal of good conduct, American theater of operations ribbon and victory medal. He was honorably discharged on December 5th, 1945. He later received an honorary certificate of graduation from Maxwell high school.

He married Marjorie June Sandberg in Minden Nebraska on May 28th, 1960. They lived in Farmington New Mexico, Sidney, North Platte, Lexington, and Kearney Nebraska before retiring to Gothenburg Nebraska.

He worked for Sidles Automotive in Sidney and North Platte Nebraska. He worked at Sixth Street Grocery Store in Lexington. He also ran the American Legion club and Al's Liquor in Lexington. He sold chemicals for Panther Chemical Co. statewide and received the Rookie of the Year award in 1963. He sold Hot water pressure washers for 40 years before retiring.

He and his brother Charles and good friend Don Ostendorf raced Stock cars for many years. He and Marge enjoyed traveling in their fifth wheel camper to Arizona, Texas, and Canada. They enjoyed collecting antiques and jewelry. He enjoyed playing pool and attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events. He was a member of the American Legion, serving as post commander for several years, he was an active member of the 40 and 8 Veterans club.

Survivors include son John L. (Danita) Paul, Gothenburg, Daughters Jodie (Denney) Ovenden, Craig, Colorado. Deborah Burns, Silva, North Carolinal step-son Eric (Susan) Van Meakins, Loveland, Colorado, stepdaughter Deborah (Michael) Bacon Gothenburg; sisters Henrietta (Joe) Armitage, Neligh and Leola Schrecongost, Denver, Colorado; sisters in Law Doris (Robert) Kramer, Stapleton, Bea Grass, Kearney, grandchildren Lee (Diane) Ovenden, Ivins, Utah, Kim Brock (Critt) Shook, Silva, Seth (Emily) Bacon, Denver, Deric Meakins, Angel (David) Kwiatkowski, Fort Collins, Colorado; Sean Van Meakins, Loveland, Alex Paul and Tabitha Paul, Kearney; great-grand children Jackson, Jude and Lily Meakins, Taylor Ovenden and Addie Ovenden, Abbot Bacon and Eva Kwiatkowski and many nephews and nieces.

Preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marjorie, Brothers Charles and Stanley, Sisters Leora Cooper and Evelyn Schrecongost. Brother in law and Sister in law Leonard and Mary Jane Springer, and Brother in law Kenneth Grass, Son Alfred P. Paul and stepson Carl L. Meakins. Grandsons Thadeus Van Meakins , Jeremy Paul, Danny Ovenden.

Graveside services Monday, August 13th at Fort McPherson National cemetery, Reverend Don O'Brien officiating, Luncheon following services at the Maxwell Town Hall, 114 S. Pine St. Maxwell NE.
