Lady Haymakers Start Season Off At Aurora

The Lady Haymakers got their 2014 softball season started off on the right foot with a 2-1 record at the Aurora Invitational on Friday afternoon and evening.

In their opening contest, the valiant comeback attempt by Cozad with four runs in the top of the fifth inning wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit, as Crete scored the 8-5 decision over the Red and Black.

Crete scored the early lead with one run in the first inning and four more in the second inning to push their cushion on the scoreboard to 5-1 at the end of two innings.

The Cardinals added three runs in the fourth inning before Cozad’s scoring rally in the top of the fifth that pushed across four runs.

Offensively, Alyssa Schneider led the Lady Haymakers with a 103 outing at the plate with a double and a pair of RBI’s.

In their second game of the day, the Lady Haymakers stormed past Central City 14-6.

Cozad was able to find their groove in the final three innings to turn a 5-0 deficit into a 14-6 lead. An RBI-double off the bat of Sarah Yocom paced the scoring surge for the Red and Black-clad Nine.

Sammy Crick got the win on the mound for the Cozad contingency.

Emily Reyes finished 2-3 at the plate with a triple, three runs scored and an RBI.

Sarah Yocom knocked in four RBI’s for Cozad as well.

In their final contest of the day, Cozad cruised past St. Paul 15-0 in a three inning contest.

Cozad circled the sacks to score nine runs in the top of the first inning to grab a commanding lead.
Starting pitcher Ali Arndt notched the win on the hill for the Lady Haymakers by throwing a one hitter against the Wildcats.
