Lex Soccer Clubs Compete For Supremacy At GNAC Tourney

Going out west to play the best were the Lexington Soccer squads as they competed in the highly touted Greater Nebraska Activities Conference (GNAC) Soccer Championships that were held in Scottsbluff on Friday and Saturday.


The Minutemaids opened up with a rematch from four days earlier against Kearney. The Lady Cats were able to take advantage of a pair of penalty kicks to notch a hard-fought 6-0 win over Lexington.

In the Lexington boys opening match, the Minutemen dueled with Scottsbluff and were victorious in a shootout 5-4 to win 2-1 on the scoreboard. Scottsbluff got on the board early when Bruno Flores flexed the net in the fourth minute to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead that held into the intermission.


Just after the halftime break, the Minutemen took to the pitch with gumption and Gerardo Ramirez netted a goal on a Jonathan Amador assist during the 44th minute to knot the score at 1-1.


The score remained at 1-1 through the extra periods and in a shootout, the Minutemen prevailed 5-4 over the Bearcats to win 2-1.

In the Minutemaids second contest and first game on Saturday, the Minutemaids showed great soccer prowess in the early going, only to see the Panthers counter attack score Norfolk a 3-1 victory.


Lexington had three scoring attempts and a corner kick to their stable before the Cats ever made it past midfield with the ball. Norfolk broke through and scored near the 10-minute mark of the first half and then Lexington had a counter attack of their own. Minutemaid Gabby Mills made a great run into space and then made a dynamite pass to Elizabeth Moro who hit it home past the keeper to knot the score at 1-1.


Norfolk was able to net a goal with less than five minutes to go before the half to take a 2-1 lead into the break.


Fatigue caught up with the Maids in the second half, as they weren’t able to penetrate the Panther defense and the forward push allowed Norfolk to score an insurance goal to cap the scoring 3-1 for the Cats.

The Lexington boys engaged in a semifinal showdown with Hastings on the pitch for the chance to play in the Championship game.


The Minutemen fell behind early and were able to knot the score before the end of regulation, but it was the Tigers that prevailed in the shootout 4-2 to etch the win for Hastings 2-1.


The Tigers broke the ice on the scoreboard with a goal by Lucas Pizzato in the 21st minute to give Hastings a 1-0 lead that they held into the break.


Taking advantage of the opportunity, Gerardo Ramirez booted a penalty kick past the keeper in the 49th minute to stalemate the score at 1-1, which in fact would cap the scoring in regulation.

In their final match of the day, the Minutemaids challenge for a win against Gering. The Dawgs were able to edge Lexington in a shootout to notch the 2-1 win.


Lex got on the board first in the second half when Gabby Mills broke free from the defense and drew the attention of the final line of defense and Marlene Cohetero crashed from the backside to net the goal for the Maids to snare a 1-0 lead. Gering answered the scoring effort with a corner kick deflection with just 11 minutes left in regulation to knot the score at 1-1. In the shootout, the Bulldogs were able to score on three of their penalty kick attempts to net the victory 2-1.

In the consolation finals, Lexington finished strong to score a 3-0 victory over the Discoverers of Columbus.


The score remained 0-0 throughout the first half of play with Arliss Alvarez breaking the ice with a goal in the 41st minute to give Lex a 1-0.


Ten minutes later, Mauricio Santos netted a goal to make the score 2-0.


Adding the insurance to secure the win for Lexington was Wes Winter’s goal in the 72nd minute.
