It was quality over quantity for the Elwood and Eustis/Farnam athletes as they competed in the 2013 Nebraska Class D State Track and Field Championships held at Omaha Burke on Friday and Saturday.

Leading the way for the TRIBUNE-area competitors was Elwood’s Desirai Grassmeyer and Jordan Wetovick of Eustis/Farnam.

Demonstrating her skill and expertise in the shotput ring, Desirai Grassmeyer muscled the ironball past the 37’11.25” mark to finish fifth overall. Fellow Lady Pirate Anna Eggers was able to power the shotput to the 32’10.25” mark also.

In the discus, Grassmeyer spun the platter past 77’8” for the Lady Pirates.

Knight Senior Jordan Wetovick was dynamite in his specialty event, the 300-meter hurdles, as he won his heat race on Friday night in 41.91 seconds. In the finals of the event on Saturday, a strong push at the line powered Jordan to finish fifth overall with a time of 43.02 seconds. In the 110-meter high hurdle prelims, Wetovick wasn’t able to get in sync and crossed the finish line in 19.44 seconds.

The dynamic duo of Taylor and Tobie Carlberg represented the Elwood sprinting contingency very well. Taylor darted her way down the straightaway to the tune of 13.14 and a spot in the finals of the 100-meter dash. In the finals, Taylor powered through the finish line in 13.21 in eighth place. Tobie competed in the 200-meter dash and finished with a time of 27.77 seconds on Friday.

The Elwood and Eustis/Farnam track teams got their day started off bright and early on Saturday, with Lady Knight Jessica Deterding and Pirate Billie Smith competing in the 800-meter run. Deterding did her best to keep with the blistering pace and adjust to the pack running to finish with a personal best time of 2:29. Smith flourished with the elite competition in finishing the fast paced two-lap affair in 2:08.
