It was an old-fashioned Wild West shootout on the diamond, as the Mid-Nebraska League West All-Stars lit up the scoreboard to win a 20-14 offensive showcase over the East All-Stars on Thursday night at Memorial Field in Kearney.
Cozad’s Jake Paulsen, Tysen Werner, Hank Pflaster and Nate Bubak all played. Lexington’s Seth Soderlund and Morgan Ansbach starred. Ross Ostendorf and Chase Ostergard represented the Melons.
The formula for the West worked great, as they snared a 2-0 lead in the second inning. The West was able to further their lead to the count of 7-0 in the third inning and climb ahead 11-0 at the midway point of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, defensive miscues and clutch hitting resulted in the East climbing back in contention to tie the game at 11-11.
The pendulum that had swung clearly in the direction of the East was soon snared by the West as they scored four, two and seven runs in the ensuing inning to ice the 20-14 win.
