Maids Tennis Challenge The Best At State Meet

Getting the chance to compete against the best tennis players in the state was a challenge that the Maids were up to on Thursday and Friday at the 2013 Nebraska State Tennis Championships being held in Lincoln.

The Lexington duo of Kelby O’Meara and Katelin Schultze paced the Orange and Black with their efforts at #2 doubles. The 10th seeded pair of O’Meara and Schultze wasted no time in picking up a first round 6-0, 6-0 victory over Alliance’s Bailey O’Connor and Cayla Tritle. The Lexington duo were facing familiar faces for the third time this season in the Dusters Mackenzie Jensen and Bailey Williams in the quarterfinal event. Jensen/Williams were just one shot better each set in claiming the 7-5, 6-4. “Just one shot here or there made the difference in this match,” stated Maids head coach Ernie French.

Maday Salinas and Skyler Speer competed in the singles divisions. Maday Salinas was edged 6-1, 6-1 by Mirisa Hernandez of Wilber/Clatonia in the opening round of #1 singles action. Maday took the early lead 1-0 in the first set and battle hard going to deuce in every game yet couldn’t pull ahead.

Speer battled long and hard  and played some of her best tennis throughout the marathon match, only to just fall short to Brownel-Talbot netter Julianna Hirz 6-1, 6-3 in #2 singles action. “Skyler has been a great leader for us and we are going to miss her,” expressed Lex’s Ernie French.

Completing the Lexington entry into the State meet, were the dynamic duo of Ellie Hobelman and Zoie Allen at #1 singles. Hobleman and Allen took and early 2-0 lead in the first set. The Maids Hobelman and Allen were then defeated 6-3, 6-1 by the veteran Titans Jenna Gruber and Paige Werner.

“All of our girls are excited about working hard over the summer and fall to make an impact at next year’s tournament,” explained Maids coach French.
