Adding the full team element to the sport of wrestling has become a mainstream event and the Minutemen were among the elite that competed in the 2014 Nebraska Dual State Wrestling Championships held on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday.
Lexington qualified for the event with their stellar finish at the district championships, where they finished as the runner-up to Scottsbluff.
1. Omaha Skutt; 2. Bennington; 3. Adams Central; 4. Nebraska City; 5. Lexington; 6. West Point/Beemer; 7. Scottsbluff; 8. Gretna.
Lexington finished in fifth place overall after being defeated in the opening round by eventual champion, Omaha Skutt. The Orange and Black won their next two matches to win the consolation side of the bracket with wins over Gretna (36-30) and West Point/Beemer (44-24).
In the opening round of the tournament, Lex was defeated by the Skyhawks 48-14.
In the early going, Minutemen Henry Gonzalez got a win over Curt Randall 6-0 to make the score 4-3, but that is as close as it would get as Skutt won the next seven matches to take a commanding 33-3 lead.
Ending the Skyhawks streak was Lex’s Edwin Perdomo with a pinfall over DJ McGargill at the 3:40 mark of their 195 lb. match to make the score 33-9.
Lexington scored their last points of the dual when Luis Nunez went on the offensive and recorded a technical fall victory over Patrick Fenner 16-1 in the 285 lb. matchup.

As a result of their opening round victory, the Minutemen would battle Gretna in the consolation semifinal round. The Lexington grapplers were able to win a shootout 36-30 over the Dragons.
Finishing strong, Mike Nguyen earned a valuable six points via a forfeit to get the Minutemen the edge and Alam Alvarez put the exclamation point on the win with a 5-0 win over Trent Boyer at 120 lbs.
Lexington’s Henry Gonzalez (0:47) and Logan Farrell (4:47) scored pins for the Orange and Black.
Rene Lazo and Dakota Hernandez got the early lead for Lex with victories at 132 and 138 lbs. The trio of Moises Garcia, Edwin Perdomo and Luis Nunez scored wins by points to rally the Minutemen scoring surge. Garcia edged Grant Bruner 3-2 at 152 lbs. and Edwin Perdomo won in sudden victory over Brady Radik at 195 lbs.

The Lexington grapplers would battle West Point/ Beemer in their final dual of the day. The Orange and Black were up to the task and dispatched of the Cadets 44-24.
The matchup remained close until the upper weights of the Minutemen started the scoring fury, with Logan Farrell, Edwin Perdomo and Luis Nunez all notching pins to go along with Josue Ayala’s major decision victory to turn a 16-12 score into a 38-12 rout.
Along with Farrell, Perdomo and Nunez; Moises Garcia recorded a pin for the win.
Lexington’s Dakota Hernandez notched a major decision to go along with the wins by decision by Rene Lazo, Mario Barraza, Alam Alvarez and Henry Gonzalez.
