Scoring in surges were the Haymakers of Cozad in earning a 73-49 victory over Chase County in the C1-11 Subdistrict Basketball Finals that were played at Sutherland on Thursday.
Hitting the door running would be an understatement in seeing the Red and Black play with a sense of urgency and storm ahead on the scoreboard 16-8 when all the smoke cleared on the first quarter of play.
Weathering the storm were the Longhorns of Chase County, as they survived the scoring frenzy of the Haymakers in the opening quarter and answered the call to flex the net for 16 points in the second quarter to cut into the deficit 28-24 at the halftime break.
Starting the third period, just like they did right after the opening tip, the Haymakers were making the extra pass against the Horns defense to outscore Chase County 18-12 during the third quarter and increase the Red and Black lead to 10-points, 46-36 with just one quarter remaining in regulation.
Leaving no doubt and flexing the net with authority, the Haymakers went ballistic to the tune of 27 points in the fourth quarter to cushion the Red and Black lead to the tune of 73-49 when the final horn sounded.
Leading the way for the Haymakers was Jake Paulsen with a game-high 29 points that included three treys, four steals and two assists.
Conor Young flexed the net for 13 points, five steals and four assists for the Red and Black.
Guard Colin Wetovick chipped in with 10 points for Cozad.
