Rising to the occasion, the Cozad grapplers will look to improve on their dream 2012-2013 season on the mat.
The stronger and more experienced 2013-2014 mat squad for the Haymakers includes a trio of state championship finals match qualifiers along with a total of five state qualifiers returning to lead the Red and Black this season.
It was the first time since 1975 since Cozad had four state finalist with three returning for this upcoming campaign.
The Haymakers will need to stay healthy and have their wrestlers spread out in the lower and middleweights in order to compete with the best teams in Class B this season.
Senior Alex Boryca posted an overall record of 37-3 this past season to win the silver medalist honors at 195 lbs. This season, Alex has added strength and flexibility to be a force to be reckoned with on the mat at 220 lbs. Boryca had a grueling offseason that improved his grappling skills immensely in hopes of wrestling under the lights on Saturday for the big prize yet again this season.
Senior Clay Trejo is a battle-tested wrestler that has gone toe-to-toe with the ‘best of the best’ at all levels. Trejo will compete in the lower weight classes and he looks to improve on his 39-7 season record and runner-up finish at 132 lbs. Trejo will most likely compete at 138 lbs. and be a favorite each and every time he steps onto the mat in a quest to return to the Saturday finals mat in Omaha.
Junior Brian Messersmith will see action on the mat near the middleweights, as he continues to grow. Messersmith was a bronze medalist as a freshman, silver medalist this past year, which in fact has the Junior hungry to return to the mat in Omaha with unfinished business for the 2013-2014 season.
Senior Hank Pflaster and Junior Jacob Hoffman return to the mat in hopes of chasing the dream of qualifying for the state meet again this season. Pflaster finished the season with an overall record of 20-12 this past season and has the potential to increase the wins total. Hoffman finished this past season with a record of 28-17 but what was even more remarkable was his strong finish to the season that included a SWC crown and a state qualifying effort. Hoffman will seek an even better performance this season.
Looking to have breakout seasons on the mat this season for the Red and Black will be Kolton Heins, Cameron Griffis, Zeke Derr and Chandler Brock.
