Janice Kay Mitchel, 71, died February 18th, 2013, at her home at Tecumseh, Nebraska.
Janice was born as a twin to Vern and Margaret (Linberg) Lawhead on July 13th, 1941 at Omaha, Nebraska. As a small child she and her family moved to Cozad, Nebraska. She was baptized April 5th, 1953, at the age of 11 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Cozad. She became a member of this church on May 29th, 1955. Jan attended Cozad Elementary and graduated from Cozad High School with the class of 1959. On May 13th, 1961, Jan was united in marriage to LeRoy A. Mitchel at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Cozad by Rev. Don Miller. To this union three children were born, a daughter, Terri Lynn and two sons, Kelly Joe and Allen Eugene.
On May 20th, 1968, she transferred her membership to the United Methodist Church in Clatonia, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir. On December 7th, 1971, she transferred to the United Methodist Church in Tecumseh. She served as the financial secretary for the UMC for two years as well as on several committees.
Jan was installed into the Order of the Eastern Star January 14th, 1969, in the Blue Valley Chapter #69 of Wilbur. In 1973 she transferred her membership to Eastern Star Chapter #226 of Tecumseh. Jan was also a member of the VFW Legion Auxiliary Post #2 of Tecumseh, Tecumseh Senior Citizens and served as Vice-Chairman of the Democratic Party for two years. In addition to being a housewife and mother, Jan worked as a Deputy County Clerk and as a dispatcher for the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office for 17 years. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, LeRoy Mitchel of Tecumseh, daughter, Terri Wright and husband Steve of Phoenix, Arizona, sons, Kelly Mitchel of Union and Allen Mitchel and wife Deb of Kearney, Nebraska, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson, brothers, Eugene Lawhead of Denver, Colorado and Bob Lawhead of Henderson, Nevada, nieces and nephews and friends.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Marjorie Sanchez and her twin Judy Mae Meyer.
Memorial services were held at the United Methodist Church in Tecumseh on February 23rd, 2013 with Reverend Clifford Reynolds officiating.
