Lady Haymakers Win Thriller Over Gothenburg Nine
Big scoring innings proved to be the difference as Cozad scored a 10-4 victory over the Lady Swedes in a diamond showdown held in Gothenburg on Thursday evening.
In the top of the first inning, the Lady Haymakers were able to break the ice on the scoreboard when Sammy Crick singled and then scored on an RBI-single off the bat of Ali Arndt to make the score 1-0.
In the bottom of the first inning, Kasey Wellmann led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and then working her way into scoring range. Just as she has before and she will do again, Wellmann scored on a passed ball to make the score 1-1 at the end of the first inning.
The score remained at 1-1 until the Lady Haymakers got a one-out single off the bat of Ali Arndt. Courtesy runner Hailey Wilson substituted in for Arndt and used her speed to score on Alynne Myers RBI-single into deep centerfield to make the score 2-1 at the end of the third stanza.
Gaining a cushion on the scoreboard, the Cozad offense pushed across three runs apiece during the fourth and fifth innings. During the fourth inning pinch runner Taylor Hoff, Jercey Irish and Sammy Crick scored for the Lady Haymakers.
In the top of the fifth inning, Alynne Myer led off with a solo homerun deep into the night beyond the fence in right field. Chloe Lundgren followed up the power surge with an RBI-single of her own that scored Emilia Carlos. Soon thereafter, Lundgren would score as well to increase the Cozad cushion on the scoreboard to 8-1 at the end of the fifth frame.
During the bottom of the sixth inning, the Gothenburg offense flexed their muscle with Kaitlyn Aden leading off with a double to centerfield that nearly left the yard. On the ensuing play, Karleigh Kleinknecht connected on an RBIsingle that scored Aden. After a Bryse Young single, Nikita Wear connected on a two-RBI double into centerfield to make the score 8-4 before all the smoke cleared in the bottom of the sixth inning of play.
Looking to regain the cushion and score insurance runs, the Cozad offense got going with the bottom of the batting order coming up big. Chloe Lundgren connected on a mishandled ball into left field that move her onto the basepath’s. Jercey Irish followed up the play with a slaphit into left field to put the Lady Haymakers in business.
Lundgren would score during the ensuing at-bat when Sarah Yocom hit an RBI-single past third base to make the core 9-4. Facing a final out, Brenna Dugan connected on an RBI-single into right field that scored Irish to make the score 10-4.
Down to their final outs, Gothenburg’s Josee Hota earned a walk. An Ali Arndt strike out thrown was sandwiched by a pair of popflies caught to end the contest, with Cozad scoring the 10-4 victory.
Alynne Myer finished 4-4 at the plate with a run scored, a solo homerun and two RBI’s.
Nikita Wear was 1-3 at the dish with a a double and two RBI’s for Gothenburg.
