Former Eustis Resident: Fred Holmberg (1938-2016)
Fred Holmberg, age 77, of Adel, Iowa, formerly of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away Sunday, August 28th, 2016, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Cause of death was complications due to colon surgery.
Fred was born in Walthill, Nebraska, on September 9th, 1938, to Lawrence and Dorothy (Edgington) Holmberg. He attended rural school until starting high school in Lyons, Nebraska, where he graduated in 1955. He then attended Norfolk Nebraska Jr. College and Wayne State College, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1960. Fred taught and coached in Eustis, Nebraska from 1961-1963. In 1963 Fred and Linda Montgomery were united in marriage at St. John Lutheran Church in Eustis.
In 1966 Fred completed at Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Kearney State College. He taught and coached in Shelton, Nebraska and Wood River, Nebraska until 1968 when he and Linda moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was a school counselor at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High for 30 years, retiring in 1998.
Fred and Linda moved to Adel, Iowa in June of 2015, to be near family.
Preceding Fred in death were his parents, a brother Lawrence and a sister Charlotte, in-laws Art and Mabel Montgomery, a brother-in-law and a nephew.
Surviving Fred are his wife of 53 years, Linda, sons Troy (Patti) of Leigh, Nebraska and Trent (Rachel) of Adel, Iowa. His grandchildren Alicia, Kyle, Bennett, Walker, and Harper Holmberg will miss their grandpa very much.
Additional survivors are brothers Tony (Jean) of Sioux City and Jerry (Elaine) of Lyons, sisters Erma Gatzemeyer of Bancroft, Nebraska and Mary Klein of Omaha, brother and sister-in-law Arlyn and Peggy Montgomery of Papillion and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held in Council Bluffs on Friday, September 2nd, 2016.
