Rebecca Jane Messersmith, 72, died on November 30th, 2012, in Gothenburg, Nebraska.
She was born July 29th, 1940, in Jacksonville, Florida, daughter of Thomas Minor Hewitt and Geraldine Julia (McDermott) Hewitt . In 1943 she moved to Lexington, Nebraska and lived there until 1958 where she graduated from Lexington High School. She attended Kearney State College and was a member of Delta Pi Beta sorority. In 1962 Rebecca married Delvin Lynn Messersmith, they made their home in Grand Island for ten years and then moved to Gothenburg, during this time God blessed them with two children, Heidi Julia in 1969 and Tyler Minor in 1979.
Rebecca was a Brownie Scout leader from 1966-1969 and involved in the Boy Scouts from 1987 to 1990. She enjoyed hobbies such as: crocheting, knitting and cooking. She worked as a cook at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital from 1993-1998, then became a CNA and worked for LTC.
Survivors include her daughter, Heidi Hueftle of Kimball Nebraska; son, Tyler Messersmith of Vermillion, South Dakota; grandsons, Eli Hueftle of Sidney, Nebraska; Cain Hueftle of Kimball, Nebraska; granddaughters, Elizabeth Messersmith and Adalynn Messersmith; great-grandson Evan Heuftle; sisters, Sarah Alvizon of Anaheim, California, Judi Sedlacek of Reed Springs, Missouri, Melinda Blough of Loveland, Colorado; a very special friend Mary Fritch, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Rebecca was preceded in death by husband, Delvin Messersmith; her parents Thomas and Geraldine Hewitt; step father, Hugo Winter; and son-in-law Brad Hueftle.
Memorial Services were held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel on December 4th, 2012, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Larry Viter officiating. Inurnment followed in the Farnam Cemetery, Farnam, Nebraska.
Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Children's Home.
