Tobacco ban discussed in Cozad
Buildings and vehicles target for restrictions

Cozad City Council members discussed a possible tobacco ban for all municipal buildings, grounds and vehicles Monday.

Action moved forward, after being initially introduced during a board retreat several weeks ago.

The municipality does have some "no smoking" restrictions in place, such as the council chambers and designate areas in the Public Work's headquarters and street department building.

During Monday's discussion, administrators explored the prospect of prohibiting smoking in all city buildings and municipally owned vehicles. A dilemma followed in regard to penalties that should apply to offenders.

It was agreed that supervisors will meet with members of all staffs, then return with recommendations for the council.

In other business Monday the council:

--Waived the reading and approved minutes from a previous meeting.

--Agreed to obtain quotes for the installation of a wireless internet system in the Wilson Public Library.

--Authorized Cozad Fire Chief Bob Zook to obtain quotes for the purchase of firemen suits for grass fires and rescue operations.

--Approved a $20 per month reimbursement program for full-time city employees who utilize cell phones for municipal business.

--Recommended approval for a special designated liquor license application for RC's Galley, Johnson Lake. The business will cater a wedding party at Chipper Hall on Saturday, June 7, 2008.

     --Authorized the payment of claims.

--Police Chief Mark Montgomery expressed concerns about safety factors in the former Cozad Middle School Building. Montgomery said that some youths are breaking windows, then entering the building. Since many doors, railings, etc., have been removed, "it creates a dangerous situation," Montgomery said.

The next city council meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 19th.
